Western expands access to higher education through President’s Strategic Enrollment Initiative

More high school and community college graduates across Washington will have a clearer path to Western Washington University thanks to a new initiative focused on expanding access to higher education.

Western is streamlining its admissions process for both first-year and transfer students as part of President Sabah Randhawa’s Strategic Enrollment Growth Initiative, which emphasizes equity, opportunity, and student success.

“We are removing barriers so more students across Washington can see college as attainable,” Randhawa says. “This work reflects our values, and it’s how we meet the needs of our communities while living our mission of increasing student access and success among all of Washington’s populations.”

The initiative builds on Western’s commitment to access by creating more inclusive admission pathways. In a five-county pilot, the Western Guaranteed Admission Program will offer guaranteed admission to eligible high school graduates in Island, San Juan, Snohomish, Skagit, and Whatcom counties with a 2.75+ GPA. For transfer students, guaranteed transfer pathways will be available for those from Washington’s community and technical colleges with a 2.5+ GPA.

Western is also expanding its reach through targeted outreach, on-the-spot admission events, increased scholarship support, and enhanced campus visits to help prospective students and families see themselves at Western. These efforts align with the university’s mission to serve Washington communities and ensure every student has the opportunity to pursue a high-quality education.

“Our goal is to widen the entry into higher education for Washington students who might not have thought that a university education was possible,” Randhawa says. “Western will be the university where those students find both opportunity and belonging, and where their success contributes directly to the vitality of our state and its communities.”
