A look back: 1978, Finding a Ride Home

Students who wanted to catch a ride home for the holidays in the 1970’s would check out the Ride Share/Commuter Car Pool Board in the Viking Union to see who was traveling their way.

How many WWU alumni found a ride, and maybe a friend or two, through the Ride Board in the Viking Union? Before the invention of Craigslist and Facebook groups, finding a seat in a car pool meant filling out an index card, hanging it on the right hook and hoping for a match.

Today, Western’s Transportation Services Office offers lots of tips on getting around without a car. Students’ Western Cards serve as a bus pass that will get students as far as Everett without paying a fare, thanks to agreements with Whatcom Transportation Authority and Skagit Transit.
